1. Dengue First contracted locally in the Town of Babylon on Long Island in 2013, dengue fever is potentially fatal. Symptoms range from high fever, severe headaches, and joint pain, to low white blood cell counts and internal bleeding.
2. Chikungunya In 2014, Chikungunya surfaced in Nassau County. A slightly warmer environment is being looked at as a possible enabler in sustaining populations of mosquitoes carrying the disease. Chikungunya can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle and joint pain, severe headaches and rashes. While chikungunya is rarely fatal, it can cause long-term joint problems and can even lead to disabling conditions.
3. Strains of encephalitis Four different strains of encephalitis are caused by mosquito bites, eastern equine encephalitis, LaCrosse encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, and West Nile encephalitis. Symptoms can include nausea and vomiting, headaches, fever, lethargy, tremors, joint pain and other flu-like symptoms but can also be much more severe. In some cases, usually in cases of very young, elderly or those with compromised immune systems, the illness can lead to permanent neurologic damage, coma, or even death.
4. Zika The Zika virus is the most recent mosquito-transmitted disease to make headlines in New York. Two types of Aedes mosquito, the Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian Tiger mosquito, and the Aedes aegypti, spread this dangerous disease. Though Zika symptoms are often mild, flu-like symptoms, this illness is made more serious by the fact that it can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse, making it even easier for the disease to spread. The biggest concern with Zika is the potential for the virus to cause microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects in the babies of women that were bitten while pregnant.
