Ticks pose a very real threat to Long Islanders in the form of spreading diseases with long lasting and debilitating symptoms. The tick population on Long Island and throughout the Northeast is booming, so it is essential that the necessary steps are taken to protect yourself, family, and friends. Alternative Earthcare shares some steps that can be taken to decrease the likelihood of bites and the contraction of tick-borne diseases.

  • Spray. Spraying is the most effective means of tick habitat control and should be done as early in the season as possible. Tick treatments should be maintained throughout the ticks' active season, taking place every 3-4 weeks for managed control. Alternative Earthcare provides the least toxic solutions for tick control based on a comprehensive, individualized property analysis.
  • Eliminate Habitats. Since ticks frequently ride into yards on hosts, it is a good practice to fence in yards to minimize wildlife wandering in. Maintaining a border between property and wooded areas is also recommended to limit tick migration. A three-foot-wide border of stone or mulch will help create such a barrier.  Other common tick habitats, such as dead leaves, sticks, and brush, should be eliminated as well.
  • Scan body for ticks. Ticks vary in size, and can be as small as the head of a pin. After spending time outdoors scan your body thoroughly to ensure there are no ticks present. Brush off your skin as you go and be sure to wash your hair after potential exposure. Ticks tend to climb upwards towards head and ears where their natural hosts tend to have thinner skin and easier access to the blood.
Serving both Suffolk and Nassau County, including the East End and the Hamptons, Alternative Earthcare offers a variety of organic, non-toxic lawn care services for your home or business.
