BACKGROUND: The health care industry is currently faced with addressing emerging security and privacy compliance measures from a host of legislative and regulatory initiatives, including the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. These initiatives will help drive security and privacy standards and aid health care organizations and their business partners modernize the U.S. health care system and improve quality of care. HITRUST is a private, independent company created to establish a common security framework that will allow for more effective and secure access, storage and exchange of personal health information.
