Substandard water sachets, artificially flavored fruit juices and buttermilk sachets have been seized by the Chennai Corporation's Public Health Department from 300 retail outlets in Chennai.
38,750 substandard water sachets and 203 water cans, 795 packets of
artificially flavored fruit juices and buttermilk sachets have been seized by the
Chennai Corporation's Public Health Department on Wednesday from around 300
retail outlets in various parts of the Chennai. These packets did not meet the
mandatory requirements like printing of address of the manufacturer, batch
number, manufacturing date and expiry date.
The seized water and food products have been sent for analysis at the Public
Analyst Laboratory. Strict action will be taken against all retail sellers and
manufacturers if the results of the analysis show contamination of the samples,
under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954.
The civic body undertook this drive after receiving several complaints from
people. Health officials have started an awareness drive to educate the masses
about the need for precautionary measures in water and food consumption during
summer because contaminated water and food could cause acute diarrheal diseases.
