Health Ministry Bans Gatifloxacin and Tegaserod
The health ministry has issued a ban on the manufacturing and sale of two drugs- Gatifloxacin and Tegaserod.
Gatifloxacin which is an antibiotic and Tegaserod that is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and constipation are likely to cause health risks. Safer alternatives for the same are available in the market.

Several international studies have revealed that when compared to other antibiotics, Gatifloxacin is 17times more likely to cause a surge in the blood sugar level (BSL) among elderly patients. The use of Tegaserod has been associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore the health ministry decided to ban these drugs under the Drug and Cosmetics Act.
