Eating slowly has been advocated by mothers and grandmothers for a long time as it is thought to promote proper digestion. New evidence indicates that eating at a slow pace may in fact reduce calorie intake.
A study on volunteers found that people who ate ice cream slowly over 30 minutes had hormones in their body that made them feel full as opposed to people who wolfed down their ice cream in five minutes. The two hormones in question, glucagon-like peptide-1 and peptide YY, appear to be released if people eat more slowly. These hormones promote satiety, or fullness.
Another study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in 2008 found that people who ate slowly consumed 10 percent lesser calories than people who ate quickly.
Therefore, eating slowly may be the best option.
