Male Contraceptive may Not be All That Welcome Among Men, Survey Finds

While a male contraceptive pill could soon be in the market, with the development currently in the clinical trials stage, more than half of the women do not believe that their partners will remember taking it while nearly 20 percent of men say that it would decrease their masculinity. The survey was carried out by Dr Susan Walker, who is a senior lecturer in sexual health at Cambridge’s Anglia Ruskin University. Dr Walker surveyed around 134 women and 54 men and found that more than 52 percent of the women expressed skepticism that their partners will remember taking the pill since women are more concerned about getting pregnant.

In comparison, just over 17 percent of the men said that they will struggle to remember taking the pill. However in a major blow to the pill, over 19 percent of the men said taking the pill would make them feel less masculine while less than half of those surveyed said that they will be taking the pill once it comes on the market.

“The manly image probably does lend itself to a reluctance to take something like a male oral contraceptive pill. I found that the cultural association between taking the Pill and femininity was also a concern”, Dr Walker added.
