Researchers from the Health Behaviour Research Centre at University College London revealed a new survey has found most Britons are in denial about their weight problems.
Researchers compared Great Britain household surveys from 1999 and 2007 and found that the number of people who were classed as obese or overweight has increased substantially. Obese people nearly doubled from 11% in 1999 to 19% in 2007.However more people are failing to recognize they have weight problems.
In 1999 some 43% had a BMI that could be classed as obese and 81% correctly admitted it. However in 2007 while 53% had a high BMI, just 75% acknowledged it.
"Half of those with a BMI in the 25 to 30 range did not recognize they were overweight and that's the range we'd like people to start taking action so their weight doesn't get any higher," said study author Professor Jane Wardle.
The details appear in the British Medical Journal.
