Eye Laser Surgery Convention in Chennai

An intraocular implant and laser refractive surgery convention got underway today in Chennai, during which Laser surgeries will be telecast live from a private eye hospital.

Over 1000 ophthalmologists worldwide are taking part in the conference. The surgeries to be telecast live from Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital would include Keratoplasty and Zyoptix laser treatment to dispense with the use of glasses.

Inaugurating the conference, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister - Arcot N Veerasami said that due to medical expertise being constantly evolved, the country had been placed on the medical tourism map of the world.

Path-breaking research had led to influx of technology from countries like USA and the UK, he said. "We can confidently rub shoulders and share common grounds," the minister said.

Referring to eye donation, he said that it not only led to corneal transplant, but also to research into the field of limbal stem cells, an exciting new treatment wherein damaged corneal surfaces were treated.

Lauding Dr Amar Agarwal for inventing the Phakonit and Microphakonit surgeries for cataract, he said that today ophthalmologists from across the world were practicing this surgery and coming here to study the new technique.

Stating that conferences such as this one helped ophthalmologists gain rich experience, he hoped that many more such conferences would follow.
