In countries like South Africa, people sell their kidneys to foreigners.Much has been published about illegal kidney transplants, one such news was in Jan 2006, about an Indian who died in Singapore due to illegal kidney transplant.
One such incident occurred recently in a Japanese Hospital, on the 4th of Nov 2006, where Kidneys from sick patients were removed without their permission and then used for transplants. The Mainichi Daily News on Saturday said that it was the Director of Uwajima Tokushukai Hospital, Hiromichi Sadashima, who had given the green signal for such operations.
The report added that, 'a total of 11 transplants were carried out between 2004 and this September using the kidneys from the sick unknowing patients'
The report also said that the process started out innocently when one physician asked another if he had any kidneys that he likes to 'throw out,' but the urologist found that he could actually use what he was given in a live patient in need of a transplant.
The investigations about donor protocols and lack of donor permission still continues.
