The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Medicines for Malaria Venture plan to fund the establishment of a research center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The center will focus on developing affordable, effective malaria drugs, Gulf News reports.
Gates Foundation and MMV representatives on Wednesday met with officials from the UAE Ministry of Health to discuss the project. The foundation selected the UAE as the location for the research center because the government is willing to host the facility and promote collaboration between the public and private sectors. The Gates Foundation has not chosen the exact location for the research center, which is still being planned, Brewer said. Ali Shakar, undersecretary at the health ministry, said the center initially will focus on malaria but eventually will conduct research in other diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
