The Ranchi Institute of Neuro Psychiatry and Allied Science (RINPAS), one of India's premier mental hospitals, has introduced specialized dental , eye care and physiotherapy services to reach out to more people.
"The move is to remove the stigma (of mental illness) attached with the institute," RINPAS director P.K. Chakravarty said Thursday. The new services are available to outsiders as well as hospital inmates.
RINPAS was set up in 1925 and has treated more than 50,000 patients till date. The institute is currently home to more than 500 mental patients.
According to doctors at RINPAS, nearly 100 patients come to the institute to avail of these services everyday.
"We are happy with the response of people. Our new services also have the purpose of removing the stigma and fear attached to a mental hospital," said a doctor.
"We can even create awareness among people about mental patients. We are deeply concerned about those patients who are dumped here by their relatives and not taken back even after they are cured," said the doctor.
