The IT department raided on Wednesday doctors and hospitals in the global healthcare destination of Chennai to net an estimated Rs 100 million.
Six hospitals in Chennai, two in Kumbakonam, 350 km from here, and the offices and residences of 14 prominent doctors were raided by 300 IT officials simultaneously. About Rs.6 million in cash as well as fixed deposits and other investments worth several millions were seized in the raids from the 30 odd locations in Chennai.Still, said Chief Income Tax Commissioner Santosh Dutta: "We have done only 40 percent of the job."
He said the raids were based on information that medical professionals in the city were making huge investments. He, however, declined to give any names, only saying that "all kinds of doctors were put under the IT scanner".
The operation was codenamed Operation Crush, involving about 300 IT department officials.
"The cash, bank balance and jewellery totalled about Rs.2 crore (Rs.20 million). Investment papers showed about Rs.6 crore (60 million) million in assets. We are yet to open and evaluate 15 lockers," the IT chief commissioner and director general (investigation) said.
"We are looking at tax evasion of more than Rs.10 crore (Rs.100 million)," Dutta said.
