Courtney Guy, an eight-year-old girl suffering from meningitis is reported to have died after a general practitioner had wrongly diagnosed her condition as an upset tummy. The girl had displayed obvious symptoms of meningitis like a sore neck. She was taken to a hospital after a few hours when her condition deteriorated. Even at the hospital the case was not treated as an emergency, in spite of the girl developing rashes. The treatment given to the girl was delayed by 10 hours.
By the time meningitis was diagnosed, it was already too late, and she died the very next day. An independent inquiry is being called for by the parents of the girl into the incident. The parents of the child claim that the doctors treating her were careless, and diagnosed her condition wrongly. Early diagnosis of meningitis could have saved the girl’s life, the parents contend.
