One More Succumbs To Gastroenteritis In Mumbai, More People Hospitalised

One more person died of gastroenteritis in the city, talking the toll to three, as more than 200 people were admitted to various hospitals with symptoms of the disease.

"A 24-year-old man from the Khetwadi area of south Mumbai died at the J.J. Hospital Thursday night," director general of health services T.P. Doke told IANS.

"There are 212 patients admitted to various hospitals in the city - mostly in south Mumbai - affected by gastroenteritis. They are recovering," Doke said.

Two people died Wednesday of the disease, caused mostly by contaminated water, in the Crawford Market area in south Mumbai.

The exact cause of the sudden outbreak is not known. The government assured people that there was no need to panic.

According to Doke, water is the main culprit in gastroenteritis outbreaks. However, samples of blood, urine, stools and water have been sent for testing to ascertain the exact cause of the outbreak.

Most of the patients, according to officials, have been admitted to major south Mumbai hospitals like J.J. Hospital, G.T Hospital, Kasturba Hospital and St. George Hospital.

People have been advised to take precautions like washing their hands before eating, avoiding roadside food, and more importantly, eating freshly cooked food and drinking only boiled water.
