Folate Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy

About 0.5-1.5% cases of anemia are due to folate deficiency.

It increases the risk of –

  • Neural tube defects
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome

Rarely severe anemia and glossitis occur.

Treatment Of Folate Deficiency Anemia - 1 mg Folate is advised orally twice a day.

Prevention of Folate Deficiency Anemia

For prevention, all pregnant women are given folate 0.4 mg orally once a day.

Women who have had a fetus with spina bifida should take 4.0 mg once a day, starting before conception.
