General Info about Appendicitis

The vermifom appendix or appendix in short, is a small part of the bowel or intestine. It is situated on the right side of the abdomen at the junction of the small and large intestines. It is a small narrow sac approximately 10 cm long and 1 cm wide. The appendix is a vestigial organ, that is, it serves no useful purpose.

General abdominal pain is often all that the patient will complain of during the first few hours of his attack But after the first few hours it becomes more evident that the chief seat of pain is at [the iliac fossa], and the general pain then usually subsides. In every case the seat of greatest pain, determined by the pressure of one finger, has been very exactly between an inch and a half and two inches from the anterior spinous process of the ilium on a straight line drawn from that process to the umbilicus.
-Charles McBurney, 1889

you seem to feel just like i did 2 weeks after i had my appendix removed,3 weeks ago, i was finally in so much pain i went to the hospital and discovered i had a bad infection, one very large abscess and many small ones, my surgeon had seen me just 2 days earlier and thought nothing when i told him how much pain i was in, if you think something isn't right get a second opinion, and don't wait, it'll only get worse....

hey i'm 16 yrs old and i had my appendix operation about a month ago, recently or jst about a week ago i noticed that the cut under my belly button has something that is drak in colour, dark blue or black or grey, something along those lines. Does this mean that my cut is infected..i was meant to see the surgeon but was too busy catching up on my school work and exams.
Your help is very much appreciated,, thanks a lot

Hi my daughter 13 years got opperated for appendicitis (open surgery) 10 days ago. Since the appendicitis was not in the normal place the cut was a bit long. After 10 days we have noticed a very tiny drop like yellowish thin fluid coming out of the cut in one particular place. Please advise why and what precaution to be taken.

You need to call your doctor, it could be infected.

Hi, my friend has just had an emergency appendectomy and I noticed he had been drinking profusely for about 3weeks prior to the incident. He is a heavy drinker at the age of 20 and increased his alcohol intake lately to a phenomenal amount. Would this have had any effect on his development of acute appendicitis. I have found lots of articles on the link between smoking and appendicitis, but not alcohol consumption.

My daughter has a few of the symptoms and we think that she may need the procedure done but are aprehensive about it because we are uncertain of the actual symptoms in comparison to other causes. How can we be assured that this is what it is until we actually get her diagnosed by a doctor or physician?

My dear friend has the same issue. He had his appendix removed laparoscopy on Oct 20, was released the next day, slowly introduced diet, puked it all out on Oct. 24. Went back to ER on Oct. 25. IV connected. X-ray and CT scan completed on Oct 26 and found abscess on his lower abdomen pelvis area size of tennis ball. Docs say they cannot reach there to drain so they just put him in IV antibiotic [Zosyn] and IV fluid. The antibiotic is given every 6 hours. He can’t (not allowed) to take food/drinks by mouth. When we asked the doctor about draining the pus out he said your body will absorb it. My friend is stable with pain med, but I am concerned they are not taking the abscess out. Also, there is fluid in his stomach they said is normal after surgery and it too will be absorbed. What do you guys think? Similar experiences?

hi, ive recently just had an operation to remove my appendix, i am a keen rugby player and weightlifter and obviously i have been warned not to participate in these activities as it could cause more problems i.e. hernia problems etc. i was just wondering if anyone could tell me how i would be able to recognise that my body is repaired sufficiently enough to continue my hobbies? and also when will it be safe to start cardiovascular exercise i.e. running on a treadmill?
