Treatment and Prognosis of Dandy Walker Syndrome
A complete cure for Dandy-Walker Syndrome is not available. Management comprises of treating the associated problems. Shunting devices (special tubes) are sometimes placed inside the skull to control swelling. Modalities like Occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy or specialized education are also resorted to. Genetic counselling is useful as Dandy-Walker Syndrome is a genetically sporadic disorder.
Prognosis of Dandy-Walker Syndrome
Prognosis of Dandy-Walker Syndrome is highly variable. Children with less severe symptoms may have normal cognition.
Severe malformation can lead to mental retardation. Sometimes even if the excess fluid build up is corrected, children may fail to attain normal intellectual development. Multiple congenital defects may shorten life span.
