Test Your Knowledge on Surrogacy

Health Quiz reviewed by Dr. Hena Mariam, BDS on Jun 28, 2023

Introduction

Surrogacy is a method of assisted reproduction where a woman, referred to as the surrogate mother, becomes pregnant and gives birth to a child on behalf of another person or couple known as the "intended" or "commissioning" parents. This allows individuals who are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy themselves to have a child (1).

There are two types of surrogacies, which are traditional and gestational. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother is inseminated with the sperm of the intended father, making her genetically related to the child. In gestational surrogacy, an embryo created using the genetic material of the intended parents or donors is transferred to the surrogate's uterus, resulting in no genetic connection between the surrogate and the child.

Surrogacy arrangements can be either commercial, involving financial compensation for the surrogate, or altruistic, where the surrogate receives reimbursement for necessary expenses only. This practice has provided opportunities for individuals such as women without a functional uterus, those with medical conditions preventing pregnancy, and same-sex couples or single men to experience the joys of parenthood (2).
