People who reach 100 years of age are often in better physical health than younger pensioners, according to a researchers at the International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK).
The new report on the quality of life of centenarians in the UK states that centenarians often enjoy better health than other groups of older people, without many of the conditions that tend to be associated with old age. It also warns that the centenarian population is set to grow (500,000 within next few years) and this growth will place greater demand on health and social care services in the future.
The research also showed that many centenarians are more likely to have experienced healthier lifestyles as children.
Experts have suggested that 1/4th of children born today will live to reach 100 and the number of centenarians in the next 30 years will increase 12 times.
