3D Scanner Used to Rebuild Face of Woman Suffering from Dangerous Tumor Behind the Eye

Doctors in Britain made use of cutting edge 3D technology to rebuild the face of a 69-year old woman who developed a life-threatening tumor behind her eye.

Ann O'Sullivan initially assumed that her headache were being caused by a sinus problem but after visiting her GP, she was told about the presence of an aggressive tumor that was growing behind her eye and had spread over the left side of her face without being detected.

Surgeons at St George's Hospital, in Tooting, South London conducted a complex operation, involving the removal of large portion of her jaw, her left eye, and numerous teeth, to remove the tumor. They then made use of an innovative computer technology to electronically scan the opposite side of her face to build 3D profile which was then used to reconstruct the left side.

"It's always satisfying to see a procedure go well and return people to their home environment so they can get on with their lives. We are lucky at St George's because we are a world leader in this field of work. The 3D imaging means I can look at the tumor from different angles and take the necessary measurements including how and where bone is removed and re-sculpted.", Kavin Andi, who was involved in the surgery, said.
