58-Year-Old First Brit to Get Bionic Hand

A 58-year old engineer became the first man in Britain to be fitted with a new type of bionic hand that can be used in the same way as a normal hand with the help of electronic signals.

Chris Taylor lost his right hand in 2009 when he was jet skiing with his son in Torquay. He had gripped a rope but when they hit a wave, he fell off and the rope tightened around his hand and ripped it off. Taylor was initially fitted with a prosthetic arm but asked the NHS to fit him with the new bionic arm, dubbed the Michelangelo Hand, costing over �47,000.

"I am really pleased that I have now been fitted with it. It is going to be a learning curve because I have been used to not having a hand for some time now. It will make a huge difference to my life. Now I have got something on the end of my arm that actually works. It obviously isn't quite as good as a normal hand but it is much better than what I had", Taylor said.
