While New Year's Eve may be the most pleasant night for many, emergency servicemen in Britain were not lucky enough to enjoy it.

It was the busiest ever night for London ambulance crews, with staff struggling an average 11 calls a minute from drunken revelers in the wee hours.

By 4am, operators had answered 2,639 emergency calls, mostly drink-related.

At the busiest point, 800 emergency calls were received an hour - an increase of 400 per cent on an average night.

"A lot of extra demand was because of alcohol-related calls," the Daily Mail quoted spokesman Jason Killens as saying.

"People shouldn't be calling 999 simply because they're drunk," the spokesman said.

Police said that 160 people were arrested for drink-related incidents in Devon and Cornwall.
