Acupuncture Appears to be a Good Option for Victims of Depression

by Savitha C Muppala on September 28, 2013 at 8:28 AM

A recent study has shown the benefits of acupuncture in treating victims of depression.

The study showed that victims get as much benefit from acupuncture as they get from counseling.

The study found that three months of acupuncture or counseling helped nearly one in three patients and they were no longer depressed, compared to one in five who did not receive any treatment.

Participants who received acupuncture or counseling experienced significant improvements over three months than those who had neither treatment. The positive effects remained for an additional three months after the treatment stopped.

"For people who have depression, who have tried various medical options, who are still not getting the benefit they want, they should try acupuncture or counseling as options that is now known to be clinically effective. Cleary acupuncture is a new option. This is the first evidence that acupuncture really helps," said Hugh MacPherson, the study's lead author from the University of York in the UK.
