AIIMS doctors have removed 17 kg ovarian tumor from a 30-year-old Bihar women suffering from Teratoma syndrome.

According to the doctors, N Devi was suffering from Teratoma syndrome. The ovarian tumor was diagnosed in October 2013 and the tumor had grown rapidly affecting the abdominal organs.
"The condition is known as growing teratoma syndrome where the tumor, though non- malignant, grows rapidly and has a high tendency of turning malignant. In this case, the patient had already undergone chemotherapy, and came to us when that had no impact on the size of the tumor. In fact, it kept increasing in size," said Dr. N K Shukla, head of the surgical oncology department at AIIMS.
Devi's husband Umesh Das, said, "Doctors in Patna gave up on my wife saying no surgery in India can correct her condition. At the same time, My wife was writhing around in agony complaining of pains in her abdomen. It is one of my friends who recommended me to AIIMS."
Dr. Vinod Kumar, said that, a case of a teratoma syndrome, where the size of the tumor was 8.5 kg, was reported in Japan last year. "The Limca Book of Records pegs the largest tumor of any kind at 6.1 kg. But the largest lobe of this multi-lobed tumor was more than double that size," he said.
