Alarming Rise in Skin Cancer Rates in the UK

by Savitha C Muppala on July 24, 2012 at 11:39 PM

It is a cause of concern that nearly five people are being diagnosed with malignant melanoma on a daily basis. Overall, there is an increase in the number of Brits of all ages being diagnosed with deadly melanomas.

Scientists feel it is time to help people recognize the onset of skin abnormalities so that it is possible to diagnose early and increase the chances of a cure.

Professor Jonathan Rees, who is leading the team, said: "People's idea of what skin cancer looks like is limited to three or four images that are widely used to promote awareness of the disease - but we don't think this goes far enough with helping people identify the problem and going to their doctor."

People are advised to spot changes in size, shape or color of a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin - these should be reported to a GP without delay.
