Antibiotic-Resistant Strain of Gonorrhea Identified
A group of international researchers have identified an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea.
A group of international researchers led by Magnus Unemo from the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria have identified an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea.
Until now the sexually transmitted disease has been treated with antibiotics and the researchers said that they expected to find a strain of the disease that is resistant to antibiotics.
Presenting the study at the 19th conference of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Disease Research in Quebec City, Canada, the researchers said that they have not been able to ascertain how widespread the new strain is.
"While it is still too early to assess if this new strain has become widespread, the history of newly emergent resistance in the bacterium suggests that it may spread rapidly unless new drugs and effective treatment programs are developed", Unemo said.
