Actually, most sore throats are caused by a virus and antibiotics may not have any effect, according to the recent guidelines published by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
Only a small percentage of people actually have Group A streptococcal pharyngitis. As an initial step, the strep throat infection needs to be confirmed with laboratory testing.
Some of the common symptoms for a viral infection are runny nose, cough, mouth sores and hoarseness.
Experts suggest that antibiotics be prescribed only after confirmation of strep throat infection with laboratory tests.
