Being Away from Home Linked to Happier Tweets

by Kathy Jones on April 11, 2013 at 7:26 PM

An extensive study carried out on Twitter by researchers at University of Vermont found that the degree of happiness increased with the distance from a person's average location.

The researchers studied more than 37 million tweets made by 180,000 users and tracked the users' location with the help of location data in order to find whether they were tweeting from home or away.

The researchers found that people who were away from their homes tended to use more positive language in their tweets, with the language improving the further they got away from their home. "Expressed happiness increases logarithmically with distance from an individual's average location", the researchers said.
