A new study published in the journal European Urology suggests that Botox could be an effective treatment in improving the symptoms of weak bladder in women.
According to figures, around 5 percent of men and over 13 percent of women suffer from some form of urinary incontinence with majority of women being affected after childbirth. A group of British researchers led by Dr Douglas Tincello of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust conducted the study on 240 women in eight urogynaecology centres across Britain between 2006 and 2009.
The participants were split into two groups, with the first group containing 122 women given Botox while the remaining were given dummy treatment. The researchers found that those who had been given Botox reported improvement in symptoms while around 40 percent of them became continent again after six weeks and a third were still continent six months after treatment. However the effects of the treatment began to wear off after six months.
In patients treated with botulinum toxin, incontinence episodes dropped from six a day to less than once a day. The number of urgency episodes fell from eight a day to three a day at six weeks. These changes were maintained at a similar level for up to six months", Dr Douglas said.
