Screening for bowel cancer has commenced in Auckland, as part of a pilot programme.

This has been started to make a difference to the rates of bowel cancer in the country which had nearly 3000 people diagnosed with the condition last year.

Only 50% survived the disease last year.

As part of this screening programme, free screening for bowel cancer is possible for people between the ages of 50 and 74.

Medical specialists have underlined the importance of early screening which positively impacts the chances of survival from bowel cancer.
