Researchers from the Otago University in New Zealand have found that breastfeeding babies instead of using milk formula protects them from asthma and other wheezing problems until the age of six years.

The researchers analyzed data regarding asthma and wheezing in more than 1,100 children from the time they were two years of age up to six years and found that the risk of asthma was reduced by more than 59 percent among children who had been breastfed.

Lead researcher Dr Karen Silvers said that the longer duration a baby is breastfed, the better protection it has against asthma. "These are very robust and convincing results which support a global public health message to breastfeed to prevent asthma", Dr Silvers said.
