Bubbles may be Deployed to Destroy Cancer

A research team from Leeds University has developed a method to destroy cancer by injecting gas bubbles into the bloodstream.

The researchers used microbubbles to carry chemotherapy drugs to the site of the tumor. Such targeted therapy helps in better treatment of cancer.

"By targeting the bubbles to the cancerous tissue, it means we can deliver far higher concentrations of drug to the tumour than is normally possible in chemotherapy," lead researcher Stephen Evans told The Telegraph. "We are exploiting the physics of how the gas inside the bubbles responds when it is hit by a pulse of ultrasound."

The researchers are due to begin animal trials of the technique within the next three years.
