The researchers found that the risk of heart disease increased among those who started taking calcium supplements at the start of the study. While the risk of heart attack increased by almost 25 percent and the risk of stroke by 15 percent, consuming high level of calcium supplements did not increase the risk.
“Unfortunately, although it is straightforward to remove those who were taking their own supplements from the cohort when they make up uneven parts of the randomised arms, interpreting the results is difficult because of the loss of equal randomization”, the researchers wrote in their report that has been published in the British Medical Journal.
