Calorie Count Information may be Made Mandatory at Restaurants and Pubs

by Kathy Jones on August 9, 2010 at 10:11 PM

Restaurants and pubs may be forced to divulge information on calorie counts in their dishes.

This may become mandatory unless the food businesses do not voluntarily put such a system in place, Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary has indicated.

The FSA was trying out a pilot scheme where businesses like Real Greek and Pret A Manger displayed calorie information on their menus. However Pizza Hut and Harvester recently opted out of the scheme.

A report in the Sunday Times said Mr Lansley could introduce a mandatory system and include pubs in this scheme as well. "We are working with industry on a range of options. At present, there are no plans to legislate," a Department of Health spokesman said.
