Can Going to the Gym Actually Make You Sick?

by Savitha C Muppala on December 13, 2012 at 8:54 AM

We all go to the gym to be fit as a way to keep good health, but a recent study says that experiences at the gym could actually make you sick. It is as if you pay a price for other people's poor hygiene.

Nearly 75% of people complained of sweat left on the equipments. Many people used filthy towels and bottles and some of the users shared such items. Worse, the study found that many people worked out with cold and cough.

The germs found on machines which are still wet with sweat can be spread to another user and with seasonal changes and arrival of flu, the gym can be a potential source of infections.

The survey of 2,000 people revealed that 22% of people did not want to go the gym because of poor hygiene. Nearly 18% surveyed said they went to the gym even with colds, sneezing and cough. Some of the users confessed to not washing their gym clothes in-between workouts and some of them did not bother to use deodorants, or even wash their socks.

Now, it is important to have some dos and don'ts for gym users so that the main purpose of going to a gym is not defeated.
