Can Men Read Women's Thoughts, Feelings and Emotions by Looking into Their Eyes?

A new study has pointed out that men may fall short in understanding women's emotions and feelings as portrayed in the eyes of women. Men just cannot seem to understand what is going on in the minds of women by viewing their eyes, the research found.

On the contrary, men were able to understand male feelings from the eyes of men. "As men were more involved in hunting and territory fights, it would have been important for them to be able to predict and foresee the intentions and actions of their male rivals," the researchers reasoned.

Study revealed that men took longer to understand women's feelings and emotions from viewing their eyes, whereas this was not the case when they studied men's eyes. Brains also showed different activation areas when they looked at men's eyes as against those of women.

Earlier research had also shown that men and women portray certain stark gender differences and one of them is the difficulty faced by men in finding out what women are thinking.

Further, men are unable to comprehend the non verbal cues of women and sometimes they even misunderstand a subtle smile to be a sexual invitation from women.

"Young men just find it difficult to tell the difference between women who are being friendly and women who are interested in something more," said lead researcher Coreen Farris of Indiana University's Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.

Women feel good if men are able to understand their emotions perfectly, according to a 2008 research.

"It could be that for women, seeing that their male partner is upset reflects some degree of the man's investment and emotional engagement in the relationship, even during difficult times," said study researcher Shiri Cohen of Harvard Medical School.
