Contrary to belief that access to medical records by patients can increase anxiety about their illness, a new study conducted in France has shown that cancer patients who have complete access to their medical records from the beginning of their treatment are in a better position to understand their disease. This knowledge actually reduced their anxiety about the illness.

Most patients who had complete access to their medical records said that the information kept them abreast of their treatment and they were better equipped to discuss potential doubts with their doctors.

Access to their own medical records helped patients build trust in their physicians.
