Cellular Mechanism Linked to Tinnitus Identified

by Kathy Jones on May 15, 2012 at 7:08 PM

Researchers at University of Leicester have discovered a cellular mechanism that could be helping the development of tinnitus, leading to hopes that there could be a development of new drug treatments for the condition in the near future.

Tinnitus is a condition when one hears a persistent ringing or buzzing sound in the ear in the absence of other ambient sounds that one usually hears. Experts believe that this condition is caused by the nerve cells in the ear that have been damaged due to over exposure to loud noise.

Currently there is no treatment available for the condition but the University of Leicester study, which has been published in the journal Hearing Research, has led to hopes to there could be development of potential drugs that could treat the condition.
