Norwegian scientists have found that children with epilepsy are more prone to display psychiatric symptoms. The findings can help clinicians identify high-risk group which aids early intervention to prevent more serious problems from arising.

It was seen that the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in children with epilepsy is 37% as compared to just 9% in healthy children. Low socio-economic status is an additional risk factor. Boys were at an increased risk of psychiatric symptoms than girls in both the epilepsy group and in the control group. These findings are based on data collected from questionnaires on children aged between 8-13years that were answered by about 15,000 parents.

Findings of the study are published in the journal, Epilepsia.
