Chinooks Don't Aggravate Neuropathic Pain

There is no association between chinooks and nerve pain, according to Calgary pain specialist, Dr. Cory Toth.

For exploring the association among the warm winds and migraines, the doctor tracked medical records of 100 neuropathic pain sufferers. He observed that very few of his patients mentioned they had more neuropathic pain during chinooks. He believes that those who think their neuropathic pain gets worse during a Chinook may just be experiencing symptoms in their mind.

The doctor observed that weather below -20 C aggravated pain. Whereas wind, high temperature, precipitation did not affect the pain. In fact symptoms of neuropathic pain diminished during chinooks because of the warmer weather that follows.

The study is published in the latest issue of the journal Pain Medicine.
