Commercial Char Broilers Cause Heavy Pollution

by Kathy Jones on September 22, 2012 at 6:42 PM

A new study conducted by researchers at University of California, Riverside, reveals that commercial char broilers, often used in fast food joints, pollute the environment more than an 18-wheel truck.

Researchers said that the amount of particulate matter released by the char broilers into the environment was similar to the quantity released by an 18-wheeler after traveling for more than 140 miles.

"Emissions from commercial char broilers are a very significant uncontrolled source of particulate matter more than twice the contribution by all of the heavy-duty diesel trucks. For comparison, an 18-wheeler diesel-engine truck would have to drive 143 miles on the freeway to put out the same mass of particles as a single charbroiled hamburger patty", lead researcher Bill Welch said.
