Research has shown that deaf people
have better eyesight than those who can hear as their retina develop
differently.
The
retinal nerve cells of deaf people are distributed differently which gave them
greater peripheral vision. This makes them prioritize what they can see at their
furthest peripheral vision, close to their ears. Previously scientists thought
that the visual cortex in the brain was responsible for better vision and not
the retinas.
Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) was
used to scan the retinas of study participants. The research which was
conducted at the University of Sheffield has
been published in the journal PlosONE.
