Major food brands once again find themselves in hot water after a Delhi-based NGO revealed that they are making absurd and sometimes false claims when advertising their food products.

The Centre for Science and Environment in New Delhi has said that leading food brands such as MacDonald's, KFC, Maggi and Top Ramen Noodles are making false claims about the actual content of trans fats in their food products.

The organization said that while Top Ramen Super Noodles and Haldiram's Aloo Bhujia claim that their products contain zero trans fats, an analysis of the products found substantial amount of trans fat in them. Top Ramen Noodles contained 0.7 grams of trans fats per 100 grams while Haldiram's Aloo Bhujia contained 2.5 grams per 100 grams.

The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) recommends that an adult male should not consume more than 2.6 grams of trans fats per day while the limit is 2.1 grams for adult female and 2.3 grams for children above 10 years of age.

"A child eating one MacDonald's Happy Meals finishes up 90 percent of all his daily requirement of trans fats. The packet of Happy Meal makes absolutely no mention of this massive dosage of trans fats", the report by CSE said.
