Delhi's First Heart Transplant Recipient Leads a Normal Life
Doctors at a private hospital in Delhi have revealed that the 44-year old woman, who became the first heart transplant recipient, has recovered from the surgery and is leading a normal life.
Sunita, a resident of Karol Bagh, was operated upon at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) May 17, 2011. She was experiencing breathing problems due to dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition where the pumping chambers of the heart become weak and dilated.
"The first year after transplantation is beset with episodes of rejection and infection. Now that the critical period is behind her, Sunita is enjoying a good, healthy and productive life," said Sujay Shad, director of hospital's heart transplantation department.
A brain-dead person's heart was donated to Sunita, said doctors.
