Dengue Fear Looms Over CW Games
Indian Olympic Associations (IOC) hopes of minimizing the criticism over the 2010 Commonwealth Games received a fresh blow
Indian Olympic Association's (IOC) hopes of minimizing the criticism over the 2010 Commonwealth Games received a fresh blow after Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) warned of a risk of dengue fear spreading when the competition starts.
A number of sports venues associated with the games, including the Games Village and the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, have become a safe haven for mosquitoes and the lack of a good drainage system has given rise to fertile mosquito breeding grounds.
The MCD has also blamed the construction of a wall around the Games Village, stating that they cannot use vehicle-mounted fogging machines to spray the area with chemical larvicides.
"At the Games Village, a wall has been constructed near the road and pits have been dug up near it. These pits get filled up with water in rain and become mosquito breeding grounds", MCD health officer, N K Yadav said.
