Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research in Britain have found that a drug that is used to treat depression can be used in treating cancer.

The researchers found that the drug, known as tranylcypromine (TCP), which is used in treating psychotic depressive cases make the cancer cells vulnerable to a drug called ARTA that is derived from vitamin A.

The researchers revealed that ARTA is already used in treating acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but so far has not been found to be effective against other forms of cancer.

Lead researcher Arthur Zelent said that their findings could be of a huge benefit in treating cancer. "We think this is a very promising strategy and if these findings can be replicated in patients the potential benefits are enormous", he said.
