A group of Dutch researchers have suggested that people suffering from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be made to undergo restricted diet in order to ascertain whether specific food items are the cause for their condition.

In the report published in The Lancet journal, researchers from the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands wrote that the restricted diet should be followed over a period of five weeks and should be given expert supervision in order to check which food items are worsening the condition in the patient.

However if the patient is not affected by any food items, then the usual drugs or behavioral treatment should be followed.

"Children who react favourably to this diet should be diagnosed with food-induced ADHD and should enter a challenge procedure, to define which foods each child reacts to, and to increase the feasibility and to minimize the burden of the diet", lead researcher Professor Jan Buitelaar said.
