Research has proved that young kids whose parents divorce lag behind their counterparts with mathematical, social skills and are grappled by emotions like anxiety and depression for at least 2-years after the split. However, pre-divorce marital problems did not influence the kid's social and academic success. But these developmental problems began with the divorce proceedings and children fell behind and failed to catch up for at least 2-years.

The study suggests that in such cases early intervention could help as beyond a certain stage it becomes harder for the kids to catch up with their peers.

The study has been published in the June issue of the American Sociological Review.
