Do Migraines Affect Women More Than Men?

by Savitha C Muppala on June 6, 2012 at 11:47 PM

Women are at a greater risk of migraines, according to a recent study.

The presence of the two X chromosomes, determiners of the female sex, increases the risk of migraines, researchers revealed.

The study found that a particular area on the X chromosome has a connection to migraines, due to the presence of a gene, which could be increasing women's susceptibility to the problem.

Lyn Griffiths from Australia's Griffith University, who led the study said, 'These results provide more support for the role of the X chromosome in migraine and may explain why so many more females suffer from the disorder.'
